Protecting your rights is one of the most important responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Office. The badge does not replace the Constitution—it requires us to uphold it.
If elected, As Your Sheriff, Ed Newman knows public safety and constitutional rights go hand in hand. Law enforcement must enforce the law firmly and fairly while respecting the freedoms guaranteed to every citizen. That balance is not optional—it is the oath of the office.
For more than 30 years, Ed Newman has lived that responsibility in real situations, not theory. As Sheriff, he will continue to protect lives, respect rights, and ensure the law is applied equally and professionally across Granville County.
The Sheriff’s primary duty is to uphold the U.S. Constitution and the North Carolina Constitution while enforcing the law responsibly. That duty includes protecting the following rights:
Right to Life, Liberty, and Due Process
Protecting citizens from unlawful detention, abuse of authority, and violations of due process.
Fourth Amendment Protections
Safeguarding citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures and ensuring warrants are lawful and properly executed.
Fifth and Sixth Amendment Rights
Protecting the right to remain silent, the right to legal counsel, and the right to a fair and timely trial.
Second Amendment Rights
Defending the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.
First Amendment Freedoms
Protecting freedoms of speech, religion, peaceful assembly, and expression—regardless of personal or political views.
The Sheriff’s role is to protect life, defend constitutional rights, respect private property, and enforce the law without bias or politics. That responsibility applies to every citizen, every community, and every situation.
This is the standard Ed Newman has lived by for more than three decades—and the standard he will uphold as your Sheriff.

A Sheriff does not control the Constitution.
The Constitution controls the Sheriff.
