UNDERSTANDING YOUR SHERIFF'S OFFICE

The “Understanding Your Sheriff’s Office” series was created because Ed Newman believes it is important for citizens to have clear, easy access to information about how their Sheriff’s Office operates.

Too often, the work of the Sheriff’s Office happens behind the scenes, and citizens are left without a clear understanding of its responsibilities, structure, and impact. This series is designed to change that.

The goal is simple:
to help citizens better understand what the Sheriff’s Office does, why it matters, and how it serves the community every day. An informed public is a stronger public, and transparency builds trust.

Ed believes that when citizens understand how their Sheriff’s Office works, they are better equipped to engage, ask questions, and hold leadership accountable. That understanding is essential to building a Sheriff’s Office that operates with integrity, professionalism, and purpose.

PART 1 BUDGET CREATION PROCESS

PART 2: THE DIVISIONS OF YOUR SHERIFF'S OFFICE

To truly understand how your Sheriff’s Office operates, it helps to know

how it is organized. The Sheriff’s Office is made up of several divisions, each with specific responsibilities. While every County may structure things slightly differently, the core divisions remain largely the same.
Each of these divisions is funded through the County-approved budget and must work together to serve and protect the community.

    Why This Matters
Every division has unique needs, and each plays a role in keeping the Granville County safe. Understanding how these divisions work - and how they are funded -helps citizens better understand the responsibilities placed on the Sheriff and the importance of informed leadership.
